Realizing Self: Finding Your Hidden Potential

Stress affects us all. Whether it is work related, caused by unhappy relationships with family and friends, finds root in differences between your personal ambitions and current circumstances, or is related to unresolved emotional, relational, or psychological conflict, stress has a disastrous effect on your physical, emotional, and spiritual wellbeing.

The Journal of the American Medical Association shows that stress and hypertension can cause or exacerbate such medical conditions as heart attacks, cancer, and high blood pressure. Stress and hypertension can also lead to mental health related problems including anxiety and depression, and exacerbates preexisting mental health conditions such as bipolar disorder and psychosis. The Journal of the American Medical Associations states that stress is as unhealthy “for your hearth as smoking and high cholesterol.”

In today’s fast paced work world, we need to find alternative solutions to deal with our day to day stresses. The American Medical Association (AMA) reports that 80% of all doctors visits are stress related and the American Psychological Association (APA) estimates that nearly 1/3 of all Americans deal with extreme stress levels, showing that 50% of all interviewed participants reporting symptoms of lying awake at night and having severe difficulties with unwinding from the workday.

Americans must find a way to handle stress, so as to avoid the number of physical and emotional difficulties associated with its aftermath. Being linked to such physical health conditions as heart disease, high blood pressure, cancer, and heart attacks and its ability to cause or exacerbate mental health symptoms related to depression, anxiety, and even bipolar disorder and psychosis, as individuals, we must all take notice and work hard to create an inducive environment to tend to our mental health. Individual counseling, or psychotherapy as it is traditionally called can help.
